Metallica is an American heavy metal band formed in 1981 in Los Angeles by vocalist and guitarist James Hetfield and drummer Lars Ulrich. The band has been based in San Francisco for most of its career.

Metallica’s fast tempos, instrumentals, and aggressive musicianship made them one of the founding “big four” bands of thrash metal, alongside Megadeth, Anthrax, and Slayer. The current lineup comprises founding members and primary songwriters James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich, longtime lead guitarist Kirk Hammett, and bassist Robert Trujillo. Notably, guitarist Dave Mustaine, who later formed Megadeth, was a former member of Metallica.

The band achieved commercial success with their third album, “Master of Puppets” (1986), which is considered one of the heaviest metal albums and their best work. Their fifth album, “Metallica” (The Black Album) (1991), transitioned them to a more mainstream audience, selling over 16 million copies in the United States alone, making it the best-selling album of the SoundScan era.
The Black Album was the first record that did not have their thrash metal style, which was present on the previous four albums. They now adopt a more commercial heavy metal style.
